Am I overreacting? E420 badged as E55...

This guy in the E-Class forum has E55 bages on his '97 E420. His justification is "I wanted to be different". This, for some reason, is a huge pet peeve of mine (and many others). I responded and tried to keep my calm, but it's difficult. The worst justification is "because I wanted to be different" Why doesn't he just paint his car pink and stick Integra TypeR badges on there... that would be different, but at least it wouldn't insult E55 owners.

What do you guys think?

Although it is reidiculous, it is just as ridiculous for people to get upset by it. Its just a car and it doesn't exactly hurt anyone.

Personally, I enjoy watching someone masquerading around with a false badge of honor. It's even funnier to see someone blow a gasket over it. Is letting other people's distorted reality affect mine, my problem or theirs?

My personal favorite is a 70's vintage 350 or 450 SL in San Francisco - one with the giant headrests and brown crappy paint -complete with an SL 600 & AMG badges on the trunk lid. They are the perfect complement to the Walmart 3rd brake light (with exposed wiring), the 14 inch wheels and otherwise stock body.

If he's happy, great - it's his car. For me, it's worth the laugh. These kind of guys don't need criticism to point out the obvious. They need a lot of prayers and even more lottery tickets...

Calm down Marcus! For us who drive E55`s, we know how to distinguish an E55 from a regular E class. Well, some times it`s hard. My friend complained the E55 looks too much like a standard E class.

Look at it this way. For people who don't know what an E55 is, it doesn't mean a thing. People who are savvy get a chuckle out of it.

.........I don't think I will encourage a friend of mine to falsely badge his or her car. But like another member has said, the extent to which you react to it is probably more telling than the guy that put the false badges. I make a distinction between this and someone who wears a false military badge. To me the military badges were earned in combat and have a much higher intrisic value than a car. I think the guy that falsely badges his car is an idiot, but getting upset over it invites one to perharps re-evaluate the reason why they bought their own car. If it is to get adulation from others then you need not have spent all that money because..........the guy that falsely badges his car is going to get more props than you because the rest of the world does not know the difference and does not care. If you spent all that money on an AMG in order to personally and internally enjoy your car with the satisfaction of owning the genuine article, then this shouldn't bother you. I think of it as those true art collectors who have a genuine masterpiece in their basement and go down to the basement episodically to admire it. Do you think that person will care if someone in Brooklyn is selling a fake for 20 bucks?

You guys are right, and I don't think it upsets me because I feel by him having a falsely badged E55 it makes my enjoyment on an E55 less appealing, I just feel it's someone being downright misleading. Someone is purposely lying in order to make themselves look 'better'. The car could be a rebadged 318 as an M3, etc. On my way to work I pass by this house with a 996 carerra cab in the driveway, and the guy's son drives a stock E34 528 (the old body style) - all stock except for the M5 badge on the back.

I guess I just lack the comprehension as to why people do things like that, and for some odd reason it's one of those peeves I have. I suppose I should just sitback and laugh, like you all have suggested.

Unless it directly effects you, I think its a non issue. On the M3 board, every other post is a picture of a modded out import car, and they have a ball making fun of it, calling it riced out. I don't think there's anything wrong with personalizing your car, we all do it, that's all it is.

Here is a picture of the car in question

He posted several pictures of his car. The funny thing is that he never installed an AMG body kit to aid in the deception.

If he didn`t install a body kit, that`s even more stupid. At least make it look like an E55! Hey, at least it`s not an E320! I was bike riding once and I saw a guy and his E55 or at least I thought so. I looked at the front air dam and could immediately tell it wasn`t a genuine E55. They de-baged the E430 badge and put and AMG badge on the right where it should belong. It also had 17 inch monoblocks.

I mean, it would be as rediculous for MB owners on the board to poke fun at you for owning a ricer (Supra).

Let people do what they want to their vehicles, because we are all human and have our own sense of "what is cool."

Making fun of my Supra as being rice is being ignorant... ridiculing someone for falsely badging their car is justified.

Nothing on my Supra is flat out lying. I don't have a SC430 badge on it, or a Corolla badge. As a matter of fact, I don't have any badges on it.

The amount I "care" equals the amount of time I put in writing the response to that post. I'm not losing sleep over it or raising my blood pressure. If I saw that car and it's owner on the street I'd laugh him off as an unfortunate clown...

BTW... I wasn't making fun of your Supra, but was trying to get to realize that people can do what they want to their vehicles.

Where is doctor Phil when you need him? I have a relative that owns some vintage Porsches. He makes fun of people that tweak their cars and remove their badging. In his mind, there is little or no distinction between a souped up Supra and a fake E55 owner.

Is it possible that someone might see a guy driving around and say to themselves - look at that loser in that souped up car? Look at his muffler!- Shaq could fit his shoe in there. Maybe he doesn't have enough money to buy a proper car so he drives that wannabe Porsche - poor thing. Remind me to give to charity.

Sounds dumb, because it is. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Ask me if I care? Perhaps you shouldn't either.
