The new V8 Engines

Mercedes-Benz (AMG) will introduce with their next engine upgrade a new 6.3l V8 with 571HP (without a supercharger). This engine will be available in all V8 supercharged cars (E55, CLS55, S55 and CL55).

Sonofab!tch! 571hp! Amazing for an AMG engine...

May I ask where you got this info from, and how reliable it is?

Impressive out of a 6.3l, however, I'd prefer a lower liter, supercharged engine instead - especially when power modding

I might have a reason to get the E350 and the E63 or E65 now if that HP number is true.

My salesguy at MB told me to wait for the new engine before I get a replacement for the E55...I think I will...I'll enjoy the E55 until then...

I have doubts...

571hp from a 6.3 V8, won't it be a high revver? 90Hp/litre is Porsche/Ferrari/BMW M territory, albeit at the low end of tolerances compared to those others...Are we use to seeing this type of engine in the past from AMG?

I heard a rumour that MB wants to keep the HP of the E63 at 525hp, and now this. It could be true if you look at the ratings of the E55 vs SL55 etc. We all know how much hp in reality the E55 has, and if this rumour is true, the next E63 may have as much as 571hp, MB is desperate to outdo BMW M...and so they should.

Also, I read something in autocar regarding MB's transmissions and how they are restricted to 7000rpms, something to do with oilpan!? AMG did say this impedes their engine developments, they wanted the CLK-DTM/SLR motors to rev slightly hgher...

But will it be high revver? Thats the question, normally these type of engines are, I'd like to be proved wrong though, as high revs could lead to a shorter lifespan. All in all, if tre, 571hp is impressive, and with 7G tronic, it should be very "frisky"

No, it won't have to be a high revving engine to produce that kind of power. Here is a 6.5L naturally aspirated Porsche 928 motor. It makes 549 RWHP(645 crank hp) at less than 6200 rpm. The motor is only slightly larger than Mercedes' new 6.3L. However, Mercedes could do much more given their access to technology and engineers than these small time engine builders.

Yes, but can AMG ensure Mercedes levels of reliability whilst producing such monster ouputs, all N/A?. If the engine doesn't rev that high to produce its power, are there more stresses internally vs high revving?

2006 CLS55 AMG
January 2005 issue of Motor Trend on page 24 says that CLS55 will be last MB with 5.4 supercharge engine. For the next S class, will be twin turbo of 32 valve V-8. Will have over 400kW (536 hp).
In same issue on page 117, nice review of the CLS55 AMG. Says US bound models will get 19 inch wheels with 18 inch option for potholed areas.

If the engine doesn't rev that high to produce its power, are there more stresses internally vs high revving?
Higher revving engines usually have a shorter life due to high piston speeds. It's those high piston speeds that cause an engine the most stress.

I take it that this applies to the new M5. I dont want to start bashing between the E55/CL55/S55/SL55 but I am just asking. Keep it civilized.

That doesn't sound accurate, the 571 number???

I think just over 500 hp is more accurate for the 6.3 V8 engine (internal name M156). There should be a 700 hp twin turbo version of the same 6.3 V8 engine slated down the line...., and that will be a tuner's dream COME TRUE !!! Biturbo V8, 700 hp stock, add Kleemann or Renntech chip and we are knocking at 800 hp.

Gawd, BMW is so in trouble if they stick to the Normally Aspirated theme!

This is going to be a good decabe guys for the speed freak in all of us. Can't wait to see that SLS.

For the curious, if you want to read it for yourself, you will need to do some keyboard gymastics, goto http://www.jesmb.de/indexie.htm, and copy the url (double tap in URL window to highlight, and then Ctrl+C) , then goto http://babelfish.altavista.com/ and paste the copied URL into the appropriate area, then select the language translation "German to English". Scroll down to "29.09.2004 models until 2008!" and go down 2/3's of the page and read the last couple of sentences just above the 4 spy photos, (or just do a Ctrl + F and type M156 in the Find field and hit enter). Hint, if you click the thumbnail photos, babelfish fails at this stage, not sure why. You need to open them from the original german languaged browser.

Someone may be able to find some more info on these engines if you Google "M156 V8".

That is a purpose built race motor, would you jump in that car and drive cross country in it without breaking a sweat? Besides, that motor is probably not very driveable, I wonder how many miles that engine will go before it needs a total teardown, my guess is less than 10k. That site didn't post the CR either, probably up there north of 12:1 with the 93-94 blend?

Mercedes has some of the toughest engine tests in the industry. Anything they produce should goto 150 to 250 thousand miles regardless of how hard you beat on it. Try and find a BMW with 150k miles on the engine that can be beat on? You will find plenty of Mercedes that have that and higher miles that are still relatively "fresh" engine wise, my 500E has 190k on the odometer and is still very strong with very little leakdown in all cylinders across the board.

Longevity is something that is not often brought up in these "performance" discussions, but it is still very important. Just not to the "new car buyer".

I know this is kind of "off topic", but can you please tell me how different the E55 is from the 500E? A small review, please

No, that car can be driven daily. In fact, they are the only team in the unlimited class that drives to and from the open road racing events. They travel in speeds exceeding 200 mph with that car. They make their engines, or claim to make their engines, to last 100,000 or more miles. Give them a call and ask for Mark.

Okay, this is going to sound funny, but I haven't driven my E55 yet, ever! I am out of Country at this time in Iraq and had my Wife purchase it several weeks ago. If it is any help, she loves it! Haha

FWIW, I love the 500E, it is so solid. You close the doors and it has that "vault like" sound, just solid and a well built car. I bought the car 3 years ago with 160k miles on it (Gulp) and it has run flawlessly. One thing that people forget about the older Mercedes is that they last. I think the W124 chassis (1986-1995 E-Class) and W140 chassis (1992-1999 S-Class) are considered by some the last of the "Built to Highest Engineering Standard" cars, with Engineers having the largest say on how the car was designed and Built. Everything else that followed is considered to be build with the Accountants having a largest say, hence a perceived lower engineering "standard" and cost cutting included. (AMG brake rotor's and lack of standard LSD comes to mind).

Here is the "Bible Site" for the 500E/E500, http://www.need2speed.web.com/, pull up a chair, these is a ton of info on Dean's site.

Another 500E site with many active members and with Forums, http://www.500ecstasy.com/forums/index.php.
