On USA cars they are located in the wrap around part of the front bumpers visible only from the side. They are amber in color. They light up and when off are reflectors. They were specifiesd in the late 60's so that when seeing a car from the side at night, you knew which way the car was pointed because there used to be Amber in the front bumper, and red in the rear bumper/quarter panel. Nowadays car manufacturers can eliminate one or both of these marker lights by designing wrap around amber or red parking and tail light reflectoized lenses. Our rear tail lenses wrap around so there are no separate red marker lights in the rear quarter.

People usually want to minimize their garish orange "in your face" visibility, so they either look for clear lenses with orange bulbs behind them, or they paint them body color to hide them.

Barry45RPM...Thanks for the info.

Anyone have a pic of the clear or painted lenses? Also, where can I find the clear lenses?

Thanks. The clear lenses with orange bulb combo is also popular with the Porsche crowd. I was not familiar with the idea of painting them to match the body color.

Any source for clear lens?

I also was confused when I heard about Euro bumper impact strip. I thought it had the clear side marker. It turned out that it didn't have any side marker at all.

I have Euro bumper Impact Strip installed when I was getting parktronics retrofitted by Sunil. It looks great without somewhat ugly orage side marker

Hmm... I just found the clear side marker on the ebay, but it doesn't look like it will fit '07 model

You can check it out here.

So without removing the bumper, is painting them still an option?

Do the side markers come off easy? I haven't played around with them yet. Does anyone have a how-to to take them off on the '07+? Thanks

Here is an installed pic of the clear side markers that I just bought from the guy on eBay. Although my car is a '05, I notice that he also sells side markers for '07 and '08 W211's.

The side markers arrived in a small box and were wrapped in bubble-wrap to prevent damage. The seller also included two amber colored bulbs.

The installation was quite easy and took only about 2 minutes (total). I read somewhere that these aftermarket side markers might leak, so after washing my car this weekend I looked for signs of water getting behind the lens. Everything looked dry.

Overall, the new side markers fit quite nicely and look much better than the amber OEM side markers. My next purchase will be chromium bulbs from Hoen so that I can get rid of the egg yolk effect.

Those look good! I'm about to install clear corners on my 2008. Please share with us how your removed and replaced the lens... I'm guessing that the lens replacement on your '05 model may not apply to the later cars.

I'll do my best to explain....

The tools I used were a small flat-headed screwdriver, a thin rag (an old t-shirt will work), and a ~9" plastic tie-wrap.

On the '05 you have to pry out the rear portion of the lens and then sort of pop out the front.

To pry out the rear portion...first, place the rag over the tip of the screwdriver. This is done to prevent damage to the original lens and vehicle. Next, carefully wedge the screwdriver between the vehicle body and the portion of the lens that faces the rear of the vehicle, being careful not to scratch the paint. You want to get the rear portion of the lens far enough away from the body so that you can slide the tie-wrap between the two. The purpose of the tie-wrap is to keep the rear of the lens from falling back into place and allow you to work on removing the front of the lens.

I can't really explain how to remove the front portion as it is not like it snaps into place. My only advice here is to just wiggle and pull on it until it comes off. My right side marker was much more difficult to remove than the left. I had to use so much force that I actually thought that I was going to break the plastic. On the other hand, the left side marker was really easy to remove - it almost fell off in my hands once I got the rear portion pried out. If anybody can provide a better explanation, please feel free to jump in.

Installing the new side markers was a breeze. Insert the front portion of the lens first, followed by the rear. That's it!

By the way...I'm not sure how much of this information applies to '07 and '08 models.

Best of luck!

In addition to what jkv11503 said, the old light should appear the same as the new one. When you press in with the screwdriver you will push on a tab that will release the back of the light. The light will rotate out from the back and then can be pulled back. There is a little hook in the front so don't try to pry that out or it will break.

The fact is that we are still waiting to hear back since the FM states to visit the stealer; this is regardless of what jkv11503 & JimPurdy says since based on the info under their avatar neither one of them has a facelifted E.

Just completed changing the side markers on the 07 style bumper. I was actually able to access the back of the markers from the wheel well, there are 2 tabs to squeeze together and slide the lens off. Its a bit tight in the back but it eventually came loose. I got my clears on Ebay and they look much better than the colored ones

Here is the eBay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-...spagenameZWDVW

You can also find him by searching on eBay for "W211 side marker".
