2006 R500 Pewter
End of Life for Hands Free Communication System? (Bluetooth upgrade)

My R500 is in for normal maintenance, and I asked my dealer to install the R-class handsfree completer kit explained in Star Bulletin T-82-70-454A. The part number for my particular car is BQ6820962.

He told me that the completer kits for nearly all vehicles (SL, S, CL, CLS, E, CLK, C, SLK, and R) as well as the core kit (BQ6820955) and UHI module (BQ6820967) have all been discontinued and all backorders have been cancelled.

He showed me a letter from MBUSA Supply Chain Management to all Dealer Parts Managers explaining the cancellation. Evidently the June 2007 end-of-life was announced in November 2005 and July 2006.

The letter only specified that MBUSA is committed to offer phone solutions for the dealer network and that future updates would be communicated.

Does anyone have any additional details?

For owners that did not purchase handsfree as a factory-installed option, there seems to be no upgrade to Bluetooth without these completer kits.

But you should still be able to buy all parts even if the B-kits are discontinued. It just may get a lot more pricey.

The part #s did change, but the kits are still available -- just under new part #s. Just last week I ordered both the core kit and the completer kit for my 05 SLK55 (BQ6820965+BQ6820964), and I just had it installed... Works like a charm (also got the BT puck).
