This is a picture of all of the "Special Tools" that you'll need. But don't worry, the dealer sells them all.....
If they don't do the trick, try this.....
Just playin' Freddy - it's just that MB seems to make everything so that you're stuck needing their special tool to service or replace it....
Good luck balla...

There is a place here in Germany that fixes them for 110 bucks. I took mine to him and he repaired it in 30 minutes and reinstalled it on my car. It is WAY cheaper than buying a new one. It has been repaired for about 5 months now ans still no problems with it.
This is his website and the guy speaks english just not very well but if you email him he will give you all the info you need for him to fix your cluster. I highly recommend this guy. When I was at his shop he had fedex in and out with clusters so he has a good business going.

Thanks Gregory, long drive from Seattle WA but if you have a way to contact him that would be great. I know it is not a hard fix, just have to clean and strengthen the contact. I found a site, but cannot remember where, that a guy and his dad got the cluster out and made the repair. Seems that there was a tool for popping it out and you just had to clean where the ribbon contacted the board.

The tool to pop it out can be easily made with a wire hanger and a pair of needle nose pliers. All you need is 2 long pieces of wire with a small loop on each end. You then place each wire with the loop end into the sides of the cluster. When you have it in about an inch you then turn the wire hangers so that the loop can catch on the sides of the cluster. The cluster has some indentations to catch the wire. Then you just give it a good pull and it will come out.
Or, you can buy the tool from the stealership but it will do the same thing.
The guys info is:
David Domhöfer
Königsweg 27
46325 Borken
Mobiltelefon: 0171 4321220
Telefon und Fax: 02862 589262
Steuernummer 307/5032/2422, Finanzamt Borken
If you are dialing from the states dial:
011-49-171-432-1220 and remember that we are 6-7 hours ahead of your time as well.
Also I know that it is a LONG DRIVE lol but the US post office or FED-ex will get it back and forth rather cheap so its definitely an option if you cant get it fixed yourself.
I hope this helps!

...unless someone has one and has similarly hosted this on their web site,
it'll cost you a mere $100.

A body shop will charge you $800 minimum to pull your dash. I don't know why...but it's listed as something absurd like 13hrs of labor. I've taken apart both underpanels, glove, steering, center console, and cluster. (Not all at the same time, but these ar ethe things you will need to remove first before the dash comes out). It's not very difficult and no special tools were required. If you get your hands on a copy of WIS you'll be set. I definitey would not pay someone $800 for something I can do in 4 hours on a Sunday in my garage.

Hmmm looks like a different guy. The guy above also shows up on Ebay but his address will show BORKEN for the city. It is 10 hours round trip from me but I made the drive anyway cause the dash was annoying the hell out of me. Email both and see if you can work out a better deal I guess.
