W140 vs. W215 CL600 Engine Comparisons

I was curious about the differences in engines in my '99 CL600 and the engines in the new W215's.

Here's what I found if anyones interested.

Very different engines... W140 V12 is a DOHC while newer V12 is SOHC.... Lower in output(assume it's the one w/out turbo), smaller displacement, but more "clean" running than old V12....

I still cant understand why mercedes took such a step backwards with their engines. I dont care what they say about meeting emission standards. They are probably the only car company who sells luxury cars that doesnt have variable valve timing. I mean even some budget cars have variable timing. They could have cut down on emissions just as well keeping VVT.

Also twin spark SOHC seems like a huge step backwards from DOHC as witnessed by the fact that they are now moving back to acoustically sound DOHC engines vs. the tractor engines that we have now.

Weird isnt it?

I had the opportuity to drive both engines yesterday. The 1st car was an '02 CL600 and the 2nd was an '05 CL600. Although I knew what to expect from the '05 because we have an '05 SL600, I think that there would be a big difference between the feel of these two cars. The difference was night and day. The '02 seemed lethargic--almost boring whereas the '05 can nail you to your seat and paste a permanent grin on your face. Both engines are smooth and pleasant to drive, but when you need to kick some Ferrari @$$, then you need the new motor.

thats not what we're talking about. The 02 and the 05 have basically the same engines if you neglect the turbos. We're talking about W140 CL's with the old 4 valve DOHC variably timed engine.

not sure of engine model numbers, but I do know that te V12 engine was "esentially" the same design from the beginning of the W215 and W220 Chassis eras.

They were different in W140s being that they had 4 valves per cylinder and produced more power without turbos.
