W211 Cabin Air Filter Change

Hi all. I'd like to plan to change the cabin air filter on my '05 E320 CDI.

- Where is it located?

- How do I access it?

- Is there also an activated charcoal filter that should be changed?

- Any recommendations of an online source for this part?

Many thanks.

Hey khaug, on my car it is located under the hood, close to the firewall on the passenger side. There is a black piece of plastic attached with one nut. Remove the nut and swing up that plastic part. When you do this, you also get to see the small auxiliary battery underneath.

I think the black plastic part is the one that says battery located in trunk. I suggest you look at the air filter to see if you really need to change it. I bought one from http://www.allgermanparts.com/ , but it was not as robust as the filter that was in there from the factory. It is really quite easy to check and replace the air filter.

Does your model come with one?? I have a different model but the cabin filter under the hood is only a coarse filter. My charcoal filter comes in two pieces, is placed and accessed under the passenger side dash, and is expensive ($120). Most/all of the online MB parts sources carry it and at 1/2 the MB price. Why would you want to replace this one so soon? AC smell? Replacing the filter won't help because the mold causing the smell is after the filter.

-X72, nice description. I just went out to the garage, pulled and examined the filter and it looks like new at 1 year, 11.5K miles. Looks like this one'll be good for lots more miles.

- Mleskovar, the pleated paper filter under the hood looks like it's impregnated with activated charcoal, so I may not have a separate activated charcoal filter. Haven't an odor problem (wish I could say this about our other vehicle, a Toyota 4Runner), just wanted to check things out.

Thanks, folks. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Would you replace a cabin filter even if it looks clean upon visual inspection?

So how does one go about fixing the odor problem?

No smell when A/C is on but when I run just the fan/vent...then
the smell...like putrid urine smell...uriatic acid type.
