D.I.Y. - M271 Air Filter Change

Okay dudes. Most of you already know that this should be your first, cheapest and easiest mod. I bought the filter and cleaning kit online for around $64.00 with shipping. This here is not the site: http://www.speedyperformanceparts.co...r=2005&br=true but it's a good place to start. I didn't notice a huge difference in power but I do feel a better throttle response and a quicker rpm range. Very simple procedure.

1. Remove the plastic cover
2. The stock filter should now be exposed
3. Remove the stock filter along with extra dirt, leaves, bees, you name it
4. install your K&N filter (it already comes pre-oiled)
5. Screw the plastic cover back on
6. Haul ass!

Enjoy

awesome! thanks for the pics and the write-up!

it looks like there's only four screws... at least now I know it won't be as hard (looking at least) from the writeups I've seen from the C55 and C320.

hopefully I'll be doing the same soon.

btw, why did you get the cleaning kit? I thought they were supposed to last 100k miles before needing cleaning?

also, the stock is supposed to last pretty long too right?

the reason why I ask is because I was thinking of just getting the filter and then after 30k miles or so just getting a new one so I don't risk re-oiling it and such and possibly messing up my MAF...

Recommended mileage before 1st cleaning is 50,000.

You could always just purchase a new filter, Phil. $50 ain't that much. I'm too lazy to clean stuff, so I might do the same.

chkdg8, very good DIY! If you can, edit your first post in the thread to indicate that the screws on the filter cover are torx screws. Very important so that people don't use another type of tool and strip the heads.

My name is Drex which is short for Aldrex. I sold my car to my friend Bartley who used to live in Texas.

I had mine custom painted the same color as my car now Midnight Blue 904 Mercedes Benz paint.

six screws and yes they're torx
the whole process should take less than 10 minutes.

you'll probably end up loosing horsepower from drawing all that heat from the engine bay

Hey Bing, sorry for the blurry pic. It was a somewhat close-up of bees and leaves. I took like 7 shots and that was the closest one to being clean.

They replace it in 4 years or when you reach 52,000 miles. Page 50 in your maintenance booklet.

I brought mine to service dealer approximately 5 days ago and they mentioned to me that my air filter was a bit dirty and offered to replace it for about $120.00. I said no way.... LOL

Now, I'm an 03 and the car did about 23k in SoCAL, and I've added about 4k of Vegas Valley Dust, currently at 27K. When I am done replacing my filter (I appreciate this thread.... BIGUPS to chkdg8 and mbworld) I will try and post pics to see how dirty it really was.

They only replace them with major service, so unless your service B occurs at month 47 or 48 of ownership, it will never get replaced. The 52,000 miles ensures if service B comes sooner than 47 or 48 months, it will not get replaces

Thanks for the wonderful write-up with photos! It helped tons.

MORE CONTRIBUTIONS:
1. Torque size is T27.
2. There are 6 screws - not 4. (dont' forget the ones hidden in the back)
3. It only takes 10 minutes b/c the screws are so damn long. Otherwise it would take 5 min or less.
4. I found a moth in my airbox! Yuck!

Good luck. Have fun. I'm getting my K&N asap.
