Long day and Broken Screen..

well here is the story.
i was driving on the freeway and got stuck in traffic, and for some reason
i left my phone on top of my center consol(armrest?) with the lid closed, and there it is, red brake light infront of me, so i braked , all i see is my treo going right to the screen (i tried to catch it, but ended up guiding right to the screen)
and there it goes, screen cracked, .
next day i took it to the dealer and maybe they might be able to repair the screen, and my estimate came out to 5300, + labor,. According to the mb service, there is no part # for screen it self, the only way is to replace the whole unit.
is there anyway to replace/fix the screen? or am i just stuck with replacing the whole unit?
thanks for your help.

btw my car is 2007 e350 without p1 just base model,

that totally sucks but dont feel bad.. this happens more often than you might think. $5300 sounds high. you might want to call parts and see if they can get you a core trade with a refurbished unit.. that can save you quite a bit. Also there are a few places out there that do mercedes radio repairs who might be able to get you just a screen from another damaged unit.

I cannot say for sure regarding your model year, but no replacement screen (alone) was available from MB for '06 and earlier. The whole unit had to be replaced.

I do not know of an independent source for your screen, or anyone who could replace only that part.

I'd look in the yellow pages and find a shop that does laptop repairs - I seriously doubt that MB has a custom LCD for the COMAND (but, knowing MB, they well may...) - and see if they can dig you up a new LCD. Longshot, but I know of at least one guy in Texas who's had it done, but I have no idea where he got the LCD...

Check this out; $800/ the $300 one is not in stock, for a W211 head unit. You can swap out the screen. If you were in NJ, I'd do it for you since I can usually fix anything.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
Mercedes has their radio's repaired here:

http://www.aertech.com/index.asp

Perhaps AER can repair anyone's Head Unit, Instrument Cluster, or Amp. I am pretty sure Mercedes does not toss head units in the trash when replaced under warranty.

Looks like they gave you a European unit. I guess you didn't have navigation? Because without hacking the disc, navi on that unit wont work in the US / Canada.
Also from what I've heard the AM radio stations don't work right on it. Nor do high frequency FM stations (Over 103 mhz?)

Just putting that out there
